A little background about me:
Let me get the resume-style information out of the way first! I got my B.S. in Nutritional Sciences from the University of New Hampshire in 2001, and my M.S. in Nutrition from Boston University in 2003; the program at BU was combined with the 9-month internship required by the American Dietetic Association. I sat for and passed the registration exam in May, 2003 (becoming a Registered Dietitian) and am licensed by the state of Massachusetts (as an LDN). In my past tenure as a Registered Dietitian I've worked with elementary and middle school children - I love working with kids! Aside from my work here with B&BE, my work also involves educating people in Roxbury, MA about nutrition as a Community Nutritionist. I work with children, pregnant mothers and adults educating them about the benefits of healthy eating and living an active lifestyle! I truly believe that chronic diseases can be treated (or even better - prevented!) through an overall healthy lifestyle ( i.e. healthful diet and exercise), and work with all of my patients to help them achieve just that. Ten years and two degrees later, I'm still loving the field of Nutrition and I'm learning about new developments every day!
On a more personal level, I think that part of the reason that I have enjoyed this field so much is because I know first-hand what it is like to struggle with weight and health, and am able to empathize with those that I am trying to help. For as long as I can remember I have always been "the chubby kid" who was teased throughout elementary and middle school; in high school I wore men's jeans and oversized flannel shirts hoping that I could hide my size somehow; and as with most people I gained the "freshman 15" by eating at the dining halls in college. Also, having been involved in the dancing world from the age of 5, I have seen the huge pressures put on young people to maintain a certain weight while still keeping "fit" and strong. I have seen (and done) many crazy things to make the body what it "should" be, even if it is the worst thing that could be done for actual health. But the more I learned about nutrition and healthy eating, the more I was able to incorporate what I learned into my own life - I have worked on my own habits the same way that I ask my patients to now.
No one is perfect...especially myself!...but I try to base my meals and snacks on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; I eat a moderate amount of lean proteins; I am physically active everyday; I even indulge myself from time to time a small treat. I have learned the ways to live an energy-full, invigorated, and overall body-healthful life through healthy eating habits and exercise, and I work everyday to help others do the same with Balance and Beam!

First
of all, what Joe at Balance and Beam did with my kitchen
was amazing. It's so much easier to cook now and putting away
the dishes is a snap. It seems so obvious, but with just a
few small changes I'm not overwhelmed with the thought of
cooking a meal on a busy day. I've even had 3 dinner
guests in the last week cause I have all this great
food now!....READ
